The Divine Feminine
By Tina Marie Jones
In ancient earthly cultures, such as the Aztecs, Native Americans and Aboriginal cultures, the monthly cycle of a woman was regarded with sanctity and reverence. Synchronizing with the lunar cycles, the energy of a female during her menses was known to bring distinct visions, dreams and answers from the spiritual realm. These indigenous cultures did not exclude the women from spiritual ceremony considering them dirty or unapproachable, they did so as the presence of the female’s energy during menarche would in fact, short-circuit the ceremony or affect he energy bodies of other people. They were thought to have expanded connection with universal energy so powerful that young women were asked to ‘go inside’ as to tap into the expanded consciousness.
What if we were to discover that the ebb and flow of the female cycle, which often coincides with the lunar cycle, allows for times of increased awareness, higher intuition and bouts of creativity and inspiration? Well research from Dr. Christine Northrup, after years observing her patients, has noticed that we routinely stay busy during certain times of the month. After ovulation, along with increased sexual desire, females have an enormous amount of energy, most of which we put toward household projects, new ventures or “our favorite’ shopping. We get out and get busy to burn off the extra hormones coursing through our veins. Toward the end of our cycle when progesterone is high, we naturally feel more lethargic, and may get moody. She theorizes that if we take the time to fully understand our own personal cycle and to utilize the energies of its power we can be free of PMS symptoms.
As we get busy we block the natural flow of information that is coming to us in every moment, our intuition gets blocked, our communication is not flowing as freely and with the blockages PMS symptoms arise. Those things that may be bothering us, or we have been getting intuitive hunches about, the more blocked the more they build to set us off later in our cycle after they have been ignored for a period of time. Expressing ourselves on the other hand, in a supportive and non-blaming way, by simply stating our truths, can relieve the tensions and put our bodies back into balance and in doing so, head off any PMS symptoms.
In fact, it has been proven time and time again that under increased stress, which being quiet about a topic or not pursuing our inner dreams can very well contribute to, raises cortisol levels. With hormones out of balance, if only for a few days, we begin to crave sugars, comfort foods and activities that we would otherwise be able to avoid.
It comes down to self expression. Free flowing spirits have balanced bodies; have peaceful minds and grateful hearts. Here is an exercise for you – sit quietly in a sacred place in your home or at the park. After taking a few cleansing breaths to center yourself, in your mind, set out the intention “I am here to express myself”. As your thoughts come, and they will come, write them down. No judgments, no fear – just write.
Let all that is on your mind flow out onto the paper. Now after a few more breaths, read over the list starring those items that have more punch to them. These will be the ones you address to get back in balance and back to peace. Remember – through all of this – God is on your side. I make this a monthly ritual to clean out my inner clutter. You can to. Tap into your true divinity – the one only us females have – go for it!
